I started a job at a product company
Today is my first day as a product designer at :Different — a property management startup based in Sydney, Australia
After working for 3 years at service companies, today I’m joining a product company for the first time. :Different is a property management startup based in Sydney, Australia. It streamlines the traditional property management process through a string of digital products.
What I’m looking forward to
Firstly, I have to admit that I’m excited about the products being built at the company and it was one of the major reasons I considered this opportunity. But something else that made me interested in it was the fact that I get to work on an evolving product over a time period.
At a traditional software company, after a product is shipped, in most situations, that is where our involvement ends. Think you could improve its design a few months down the road with new findings? Well, it’s too late, the client is no longer with us.
At a product company, you get to be involved with the products throughout its journey. Through different milestones, investment rounds, expansions, and so on. You get to nurture the baby you created… so to speak.
I know there are pros and cons to everything, but this is something I’m looking forward to.
An update about some of the stuff I’m reading these days
Atomic Habits by James Clear
Saying that I’m a professional procrastinator is an understatement — You merely adopted it. I was born in it, molded by it. I wanted to develop better habits and make use of the abundance of free time I had in the past few weeks.
I decided that I needed some professional guidance and I turned to the highest-rated book on the subject I could find. We’ve all heard of ‘Atomic Habits’. It was time to see what the hype was about.
I have to say, right off the bat, this is a fantastic read. It’s very practical and a simple read for most people. I’m still at the very first few chapters but I will make a summary of it once I’m done.
Inspire by Marty Cagan
Another book I just got myself into and another book I was immediately immersed in. If you’re a product manager, product designer, or any individual in the process, this is a gem of a read.
The book covers the teachings for becoming a great product manager, how to build great product teams, inspiring case studies, and a lot more.
What’s next for Product Heroes
As you might know, this is my first-ever edition of the newsletter (self five ✋🏼). I want to expand this into a few different products ideas I have down the road. For now, I’m focusing on the quality of the editions that I send out every month.
I’m also looking into ways I can re-brand to a new name that is more unique on the internet.
I will focus this newsletter on product design, strategy, updates about my professional career, stuff I’m reading or watching, and a few more updates that I think are important to you. I’ll see you in the next one, cheers.
